Hypocrisy

Recently our local Raley’s grocery store became a “O-N-E” store — Organics, Nutrition, and Education.

Okay.

The first change we noticed was that a lot of common things we bought were gone. No more did they have Gallo Salami or the cheap-ass hot-dogs we buy to hide the dog’s pills in. Only gourmet salami and sausages. I love my dog, but I wouldn’t exactly say he has a discerning palate — he loves the hot dogs that are $5 for 2-dozen just as much as the ones that are $1/each. He probably loves the cheap ones more because I’m not weeping when I give him three pieces of the cheap ones.

They also really reduced their soda selections under the guise of not carrying anything with artificial sugars or flavorings. I don’t buy a lot of soda but I do occasionally pick up a 12-pack of Fresca.

And eggs. No more $2 a dozen eggs — the cheap ones now are $4 a dozen.

No more regular mayonnaise. Only organic mayonnaise. Same with dairy products like half-and-half.

Same with vegetables.

You’re probably seeing a trend.

Okay, I get it — we should eat healthier. Fine.

BUT! Be consistent.

They also have four aisles of verifiable poison for consumption. Sure, some call it alcohol — beer and wine and distilled spirits. Don’t get me wrong — I love Scotch and red wine and vodka and gin. But I’m not kidding myself that it’s healthy for me. And if Raley’s is going to be honest and have a store of healthy things, they should own it and get rid of the booze.

Oh…wait…that’s profitable?

So I’m guessing that this is all a ruse and they’re just carrying only organic stuff because the profit margin is higher. And they’ll keep the booze — organic or not — and clearly not nutritious — because it’s got a huge profit margin, too.
