Yes, you can make your own sour cream. I did it years ago for fun but recently thought I should add it here out of pity for a friend who worries that, in their travels, she and her husband won’t be able to find good sour cream.

Sour Cream

Yes, it's sour cream. But you can adjust seasoning and sourness.

Equipment

  • 1 Jar
  • Cheese cloth (optional)

Ingredients

  • 227 grams heavy cream (1 cup)
  • 5 grams white vinegar or lemon juice (1 teaspoon)
  • 57 grams whole milk (ΒΌ cup)

Instructions

  • Whisk together the cream and vinegar (or lemon juice).
  • Let sit for 10 minutes.
  • Add the milk. Stir well.
  • Pour the whole concoction into a jar, cover with lid or cheesecloth secured with a rubber band, let it sit at room temperature for 24-48 hours.
  • Chill before serving.
